What Fills Your Cup
This Thanksgiving?
‘Tis the season to gather, eat, and remember what we are thankful for. Even if your gathering is not what it used to be and the meal is simple fare, it feels like this year more than ever, it’s important for us to pause for a gratitude moment. Gratitude has a way of turning our focus away from the many things that are going sideways in the world, and reminding us to open our hearts to one another.
Our gospel story for Sunday reminds us that when Jesus said, “I am the bread of life,” he was addressing a spiritual hunger and thirst. We know there is a spiritual hunger among many, in and out of faith communities, which reaches across all ages and stages. So, this week I have been asking folks what they are longing for, and what our society is longing for. The most popular response to that question by far, is connection. At a time when so much divides us, what we really need is to find the common ground – the bread of life, that unites us and feeds our longing hearts.
This Thanksgiving weekend let’s think beyond the food that fills our plates and consider the relationships that satisfy our spiritual hunger and thirst. “Jesus said to the crowd, "I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” We find the living Christ in our relationships with one another, the connections that feed us.
What fills your cup with comfort, connection, and gratitude this year? I hope you can take a moment to give thanks for the blessings that quench your spiritual appetite. May your cup overflow with goodness.
Peace and joy
