“Here Comes
the Sun . . .
doo-d-doo-doo”
George Harrison, 1969
This message will be arriving in your inbox on the Summer Solstice. This is the time of year that we experience the most
hours of daylight. I think that is worth a celebration, especially considering the lack of daylight during the long winter months in this part of the northern hemisphere. Hats off to the sun! Actually, no! Put your hat back on!! Bring on the summer!
Along with more daylight of course, comes more energy from the sun. I believe that also has a positive effect on our spiritual health and well being. This season brings us warmth and growth which contributes to our feelings of contentment and happiness. As our gardens fill up with vegetables and flowers we experience the abundance of the season. My hope is that the abundance we experience around us spills over into our theology.
Our spiritual well being relies on the inward journey we take from scarcity to abundance. Marking the Summer Solstice is a good opportunity to take a short break from the news and other sources that constantly tell us what we lack and what we need.
Let’s pause in this day and give thanks for the gifts all around us. In this moment, let’s remember the abundance of God’s love and grace that is for everyone and all things. Let’s dare to imagine that we already have what we need, and let our contentment and joy have its day in the sun.
Peace and joy,
Nancy
